Install Microsoft Office 365 Apps on a Macintosh Computer


Follow these steps to install CUIMC's licensed version of Microsoft Office 365 Apps (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote) on your Macintosh computer.

  1. Your login to the computer must have administrative rights. If not, please contact your Certified IT Group to install it for you.
  2. CUIMC Duo multifactor authentication (MFA) is required when signing in to email and Microsoft 365 Apps from off campus, please make sure you have set up your CUIMC Duo account.
  3. Verify compatibility for your computer by checking system requirements for Microsoft 365 plans for Business at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/microsoft-365-and-office-resources.
  4. IMPORTANT: Make sure you have uninstalled any prior versions of Office before installing Microsoft 365 Apps.  Quick steps are listed here, or see more detailed instructions and help with issues on Microsoft's Uninstall Office 2016, 2019, or Uninstall Office 2011 pages.
    1. From your Mac's topmost (Finder) menu select Go - Applications.
    2. Select all Microsoft applications and drag them to the Trash (or right/Command click and select Move to Trash). This can vary depending on the Office version installed.
    3. Empty the Trash folder.
  5. Sign in to http://portal.office365.com with your full CUIMC email address and its password.
  6. In the Apps page that appears, select Install Office in the top right, then Office 365 apps from the drop down menu.

  7. Just a few more steps... window will appear, then begin downloading a Microsoft_Office... installation file.
    If prompted browse to the desired location on your Mac to save the installation file and click Save.
  8. After the download finishes, browse to the Microsoft_Office...Installer.pkg file and double-click on it to begin installation. If you weren't prompted for a location in the step above, it should be in your Downloads folder.

  9. An Install Microsoft Office... wizard will appear, select Continue in the lower right.

  10. Select Agree at the software license prompt, then Continue.
  11. If prompted for a destination, select the appropriate option (Install for all users on the computer or Install for just me if you only want Office available under your current Mac login) and click Continue.

  12. Select the Install button in the next window continue with the Standard Installation.
  13. If prompted, enter your Mac user account's password and click Install Software to continue.

  14. The wizard will show its status as Office is installed, then a success message when done. Click Close to exit the wizard.
    Installation Successful message You can also delete the downloaded Microsoft_Office...Installer.pkg file from your Mac, it is no longer needed.
  15. Open your Mac's Finder and go to the Applications folder. Double-click on one of the Microsoft programs, such as Microsoft Excel.
  16. What's New in... window will open, click Get Started at the bottom.
  17. Sign in prompt will appear. Enter your full CUIMC email address, click Next, then enter your CUIMC email password and click Sign in.
  18. If you are not connected to a campus network (CUIMC wired, wireless, or VPN), you will see a prompt to choose your Duo multifactor authentication (MFA) method for this sign in. Select one and approve the Duo method to confirm and complete your sign in; for more help see full steps for Using Duo with Email and Office 365.
  19. You're All Set message will appear. Click Start Using... to continue.
  20. The program's splash screen will appear. Click your initials in the upper left corner to see your Microsoft Cloud connected services.

  21. Your Office/Microsoft 365 Apps installation is complete. The first time you open any of the other newly installed Microsoft apps, you may be prompted with Get Started and/or Sign In windows.
