Install Microsoft Office 365 Apps on a Windows Computer


Follow these steps to install the CUIMC licensed version of Microsoft 365 Apps (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more) on your Windows computer.

Instructions

  1. Your login to the computer must have administrative rights. If not, please contact your Certified IT Group to install it for you.
  2. CUIMC Duo multifactor authentication (MFA) is required when signing in to email and Microsoft 365 Apps from off campus, please make sure you have set up your CUIMC Duo account.
  3. Verify compatibility for your computer by checking system requirements for Microsoft 365 plans for Business at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/microsoft-365-and-office-resources.
  4. IMPORTANT: Make sure you have uninstalled any prior versions of Office* before installing Microsoft 365 Apps. Quick steps are listed here, or see more detailed instructions and help with issues on Microsoft's Uninstall Office from a PC page.
    1. Select the Start button/Windows flag in the lower left, type Control Panel in the search field, then select Control Panel in the results that appear.
    2. In the Control Panel select Programs - Programs and Features, right-click on the installed Microsoft Office version, then select Uninstall.
    * NOTE: If Visio and/or Project are installed, they are not included with Office 365 Apps. You must however:
    1. Verify that you have file(s) and keys or licenses to re-install the program(s)
    2. Uninstall Visio/Project, then
    3. Re-install them after installing Office 365 Apps.
  5. Sign in to http://portal.office365.com with your full CUIMC email address and its password.
  6. In the Apps page that appears, select Install Office apps in the top right, then Office 365 apps from the drop down menu.

  7. The browser will show a message with Just a few more steps... follow prompts to Run (or Save and then Run) the installation.

  8. Select Yes in the User Account Control - Do you want to allow... window.

  9. Microsoft  365 Apps will begin installing and display its progress both in the browser and in a Microsoft Office pop up window. It may take a few minutes or longer to complete.
    If you do not see the Microsoft Office status window, look for a red icon in the bottom toolbar of your Windows computer and click on it to make the window come to the forefront.

  10. When done the pop up window will display You're all set! Office is installed now. Click Close at the bottom of the message to close the installer, and Close in the browser window to exit installation completely.

  11. Open one of the programs (Word, Excel, etc.) from your computer's list of apps.
  12. Sign in to set up Office window will appear; click the Sign in button near the bottom.
    If you are using a computer that is on the MC domain it may skip the sign in steps.
  13. In the Activate Office window, enter your full CUIMC email address, click Next, then enter your CUIMC email password and click Sign in.
  14. If you are not connected to a campus network (CUIMC wired, wireless, or VPN), you will see a prompt to choose your Duo multifactor authentication (MFA) method for this sign in. Select one and approve the Duo method to confirm and complete your sign in; for more help see full steps on Using Duo with Email and Office 365.
  15. The app may take a moment to finish opening, then display The fine print for licensing acceptance. Click the Accept and start... button to continue.
  16. The top right corner of the app's splash screen will show your name and CUIMC email address. Microsoft 365 Apps is now installed and ready to use. The first time you open any of the other newly installed Office apps, you may be prompted with Get Started and/or Sign In windows.
