Set a Windows Computer to Automatic Network Addressing (DHCP)

All computers connecting to the CUIMC network must be registered and inventoried before they can connect. Please see the Connect to the Wired Network page for full instructions.

Once registration is processed the computer should automatically connect. If not please make sure it is set to use automatic addressing, also called DCHP. Steps below will help set DHCP on a Windows computer.

  1. Open the Control Panel: use the computer's Search bar to find the Control Panel. You can also look for it in the apps list under a Windows System heading.
  2. Select Network and Internet if listed, then Network and Sharing Center. Network and Sharing link in Control Panel
  3. Select the Change adapter settings link to the left.
  4. Find the connection you want to check or change, usually Local Area Connection (not VPN) or Ethernet, and right-click on it. List of Network Connections
  5. Select Properties from the menu that appears. If prompted, enter the computer's Administrative login and password. If you do not know this please contact the IT staff that manages your computer to have them set DHCP for you.
  6. Near the center of the network connection's Properties window scroll down to find Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP). Click on it once to highlight, then select the Properties button. LAN Properties Window
  7. Make sure the General tab is selected. If you see an IP address or other specific information rather than the automatic options, read this entire step before changing anything.
To set automatic addressing select the options for:
    • Obtain an IP address automatically
    • Obtain DNS server address automatically
Changing to automatic IP and DNS addressing will immediately remove any IP address and server information that may be stored here, if you will need these settings on another network you should make note of them before removing.
  8. Click the OK button in the lower right, then OK again to exit and save the changes. Close any Network or Control Panel windows that are still open. TCPIP Properties
  9. Restart your computer.  If your computer is properly registered for wired connection at CUIMC it will automatically connect to the campus network.
