Use these steps to check the Android operating system (OS) version on a smartphone or tablet and check for any updates.
Due to the variety of Android device hardware and software, the steps below may differ. Updates for Android phones are typically released by the cellular carrier. If you are not able to use these steps please check the carrier or device manufacturer's website or help documentation.
Check Your Android Version
- Select Settings
- Select About device (or System, then About Phone)
- Select Android version to see full details
Check for and Install Android Updates
Note that newly released operating systems may not be fully compatible with CU and CUIMC resources. Please avoid updating immediately after a major release (i.e. from Android OS 11 to 12) unless there is a security risk; if possible check with your Certified IT Group, department or school to verify that any needed work or academic apps have been tested for compatibility.
- Before updating any operating system be sure to run a backup. This prevents permanent loss of files, data etc. if the update causes issues on the device. Steps will vary based on your Android device; you may be able to enter Settings and search "backup", or connect your device to your computer and copy files.
IMPORTANT: Do not backup PHI to Google Drive (or any vendor that does not have the required agreement with CUIMC). Keep in mind any there may be sensitive data in email attachments, downloads, etc.
- Plug the device in to its power supply to avoid an interruption caused by a drained battery.
- Select Settings - System - System update (or enter Settings and search "update").
- Follow prompts to check for and install any updates.
