Run a BitLocker System Check on a Student Computer

Instructions here are provided as a courtesy only for students to set up BitLocker in compliance with CUIMC requirements.
IMPORTANT: Computers used for work  - including any personally owned - must have BitLocker set up by the department or division's Certified IT Group as per CUIMC Information Security Requirements.

Steps here help with using BitLocker's initial configuration check to verify that your computer meets system requirements. You can cancel BitLocker set up after the check runs if you are not yet ready to encrypt the computer.

  1. Open the Control Panel: right-click on the Start menu and select it from the list, or use the Search box to find and select the Control Panel.
  2. Select the BitLocker Drive Encryption link. You may need to select a System and Security link first.

  4. At the Are you ready to encrypt this drive prompt, check the option to Run BitLocker system check

  5. BitLocker will check the PC's configuration and display a message if it is not compatible.
    • A message that "A compatible Trusted Platform Module (TPM) security device must be present on this computer, but a TPM was not found." indicates that TPM is either not installed or is not activated. Click the Cancel button and see the Checking and Activating TPM instructions at the bottom of the Preparing BitLocker article.

    • Other messages may indicate that BitLocker cannot be used, please review any linked information in the error.
  6. If the computer is compatible, you will see a window for BitLocker Drive Encryption setup and can continue or cancel until you are ready to enable BitLocker.
