Set a Macintosh Computer to Automatic Network Addressing (DHCP)

All computers connecting to the CUIMC network must be registered and inventoried before they can connect. Please see Connect to the Wired Network for full instructions.

Once registration is processed the computer should automatically connect. If not please make sure it is set to use automatic addressing, also called DHCP. The instructions on this page will help you set DHCP on a Macintosh computer.

  1. Open System Preferences (from your dock, or click the Apple icon at the upper left corner of your screen, then System Preferences in the menu that appears).
  2. Select the Network icon.
  3. Click on the network connection you need to configure (usually Ethernet) from the list on the left to highlight it, then select the Advanced button in the lower right. Macintosh Network Window with Ethernet Selected
  4. Make sure TCP/IP is selected in the top menu bar and look at the Configure IPv4 option.
    • If it is set to Using DHCP with manual address, the Mac is using a static address. If there are other networks you use regularly that require this you will want to write down the IPv4 Address and other information in this screen, and check with IT support for the network(s) to see if it is required.
    • Select Using DHCP from the Configure IPv4 drop down menu to set automatic addressing.

  5. Click OK in the lower right, then Apply to close the Network window and save any changes.
  6. Restart your computer. If your computer is properly registered for wired connection at CUIMC it will automatically connect to the campus network.
